Boise School District to reform policies after intoxicated man boards school bus

According to a recent news release, the Boise School District completed an investigation of an intoxicated non-student boarding a school bus on Nov. 9, 2023, en route to Boise High and North Junior High.

The release says the district will address the following areas of concern.

Overcrowding: The number of students created confusion during the bus stop when several students entered and exited the bus when they realized it was full. Reassigning bus routes to reduce the number of students eligible for the route would fix the issue. All students who currently ride the bus will still receive transportation but may be assigned a new route.

Bus Stop: The stop where the non-students boarded is also a stop for Valley Regional Transit buses. Evidence indicates the suspect may have believed he was boarding a city bus. The district is exploring new stop locations to improve safety while remaining accessible for current students.

Student Identification: Many parents questioned allowing students on the school bus without valid identification, but the district says students being left behind at a bus stop in the mornings, processing of new students and delays to route schedules may result in students missing school or being late.

The district is forming a Student Transportation Advisory committee to explore the option of mandatory student identification and additional topics related to bus services.

Improved Training for School Bus Drivers: The district says the driver's actions were exemplary, and his training on addressing inappropriate student behavior played a role in resolving the situation, but this is an opportunity to revise and review basic operating procedures and implementation of training.

Student Awareness and Reporting: There were concerns students did not report suspicious behavior before the school bus arrival or while on the bus. The district will provide student training or education on reporting concerning behavior.
