Julio Urías Arrest News
Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Julio Urías was arrested on Sunday night near Banc of California Stadium, where soccer star Lionel Messi was playing in a Major League Soccer game with LA Galaxy.
Urías, 25, was arrested at about 9:30 p.m. PT and booked into jail around 10:30 p.m., according to jail records. He posted $20,000 bail and was released shortly after midnight, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department booking records. He is due in court on Oct. 4.
The Los Angeles Police Department said Urías was charged with misdemeanor domestic battery but did not provide any details about the incident or the victim.
This is the second time Urías has been arrested for domestic violence in the past four years. He was arrested in May 2019 for investigation of possible misdemeanor domestic battery, after an altercation with a woman in the parking lot of a Los Angeles mall. He was not prosecuted by the Los Angeles city attorney on the condition that he complete a 52-week domestic violence counseling program and commit no acts of violence for the next year. He was suspended for 20 games by Major League Baseball for violating its joint domestic violence policy.
Urías is one of the Dodgers’ top pitchers and is set to become a free agent after the World Series. He is pitching on a $3.6 million, one-year contract in his first season of salary arbitration eligibility.
He helped the Dodgers win the World Series during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, going 4-0 with a 1.17 ERA in 23 postseason innings. He earned the save in the clinching Game 6 against Tampa Bay. The left-hander leads the majors in wins in 2021, when he is 16-3 with a 2.99 ERA. He ranks fourth in NL Cy Young Award voting this year after going 10-5 with a 3.27 ERA.
The Dodgers said they are aware of the incident involving Urías and that he will not be traveling with the team.
“We are aware of an incident involving Julio Urías that occurred last night,” the team said in a statement while declining further comment.
MLB said it has launched an investigation into the matter.
“Major League Baseball is aware of and looking into allegations involving Julio Urías,” MLB said in a statement.
Urías had been scheduled to make his next start on Tuesday in St. Louis against the Cardinals, but his status is now uncertain.
